New Work: Editorial Photography for Felix Magazine

Photographing people on-location for magazine editorials is one of my favorite types of assignments. As a photographer with extensive wedding, event, portrait, and commercial experience, I find that editorial assignments challenge me to blend all of my experience into the task at hand.

Every location and personality is different. Lighting, environment, time limitations, story tone, limited resources, etc., are all challenges to navigate. I always have my travel lighting kit and full set of lenses and camera bodies with me, but each photoshoot is a new equation to solve. How can I make an engaging image in this particular environment that makes sense for the story?

For Matt’s editorial, we were shooting in LA in a hotel in Hollywood. It was raining that day so we had to dodge showers and our original plans went out the window. I went for edgy, moody, and a bit of LA injected into the background of the 3rd portrait. Matt is an absolutely radiant human being, so that made my job easy!

Ryan’s shoot took place in Paris Club in Chicago, which is pretty much a dark cave. Utilizing available light, a few LEDs, and some dramatic angles, I captured something a little different than the “typical Sommelier” vibe. For some of these he was even standing on tables! Ryan was a great sport and went along with all my goofy requests.

Shea Vaughn was also photographed on location in Los Angeles, she was nice enough to provide the use of her amazing workout space. As the creator of Sheanetics, I needed something bright and fresh,  and this location worked perfectly. The biggest challenge were battling reflections of lights in the windows, and trying to imitate Shea’s poses (I couldn’t)!

Happy with how these turned out, and love seeing them published! Shout out to HMUAs Paula at City Lights Makeup & Jean Ramos and stylist Rachel J Styling for help on many of these!
